Job Summary:

The Heavy Vehicle Driver will report to the Groundsman and is responsible for driving and operating trucks safely for refuse removal on a weekly basis. This role also involves assisting the Gang Overseer and participating in the daily maintenance of stations and property, ensuring all facilities are maintained to a presentable, safe, and reliable standard as required by Rand Water.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Refuse Removal: Perform weekly refuse removal on the property and inside the plant.
  • Transport: Safely transport passengers, employees, equipment, and materials as needed.
  • Vehicle Maintenance: Maintain the cleanliness of the truck and report any defects to the supervisor.
  • Operational Support: Assist the Gang Overseer with overseeing employees, ensuring they are following safety procedures and wearing necessary PPE.
  • Supervision: Monitor worker performance, inspect tasks, report to the supervisor, and ensure tools are available and securely stored when not in use.
  • Administrative Duties: Complete job cards, time sheets, and overtime reports; maintain stock levels and keep accurate records of materials and spares.
  • Health and Safety: Report any incidents or defects, ensure safe working procedures are followed, and maintain a clean and orderly environment.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education: Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Experience: At least 2 years of experience operating heavy vehicles.
  • License: Code 14 driver’s license with the ability to pass the Rand Water K53 driver’s test.
  • Additional Skills: Experience operating a back-actor and prior supervisory experience is advantageous.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Driving Skills: Proficient in driving heavy vehicles.
  • Communication: Good communication skills for effectively managing and instructing a team.
  • Supervision: Ability to supervise and maintain good labour relations.
  • Safety Awareness: Knowledge of safe working procedures, safety regulations, and first aid.
