POST 11/20: DRIVER / MESSENGER (REF NO: CSP/06/2026)
The Department invites suitably qualified and motivated individuals to apply for the position of Driver/Messenger. REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must be in possession of a Grade 10 certificate or ABET Level 4 qualification. Candidates should have a minimum of one (1) to two (2) years of relevant working experience as a driver or messenger. This experience should demonstrate the ability to handle transport-related duties responsibly and efficiently.
A sound understanding of National Traffic Regulations is essential. Applicants must possess knowledge of messenger and driver processes and procedures, including document handling and transportation protocols within an organizational setting. Experience in handling confidential and classified documents is critical, as the role involves dealing with sensitive departmental information that must be protected at all times.
Candidates must have a good knowledge of local routes, particularly within Pretoria and surrounding areas, and be well-versed in traffic laws. The ability to assess the condition and roadworthiness of motor vehicles is required to ensure the safety of both the driver and passengers. DUTIES
The successful candidate will be responsible for driving light and medium motor vehicles to transport passengers and deliver various items such as mail, documents, and parcels. This includes ensuring that all passengers and goods are transported safely and reach their intended destinations on time.
A key responsibility will be the transportation of departmental employees to various locations for official purposes. This may include meetings, site visits, and other work-related engagements. The driver must ensure that all trips are conducted in a safe, efficient, and professional manner.
The role also involves delivering, collecting, and distributing official documents, mail, and parcels. The incumbent must ensure that all items are delivered to the correct destination promptly and securely. Special attention must be given to confidential and classified documents, ensuring that they are handled with the utmost care and discretion.
The Driver/Messenger will be required to adhere strictly to all safety protocols and driving regulations. This includes compliance with traffic laws, departmental transport policies, and any other relevant regulations. The safety of passengers, goods, and the vehicle itself must always be a top priority.
Routine vehicle checks are an important aspect of the role. The incumbent must inspect the vehicle before each trip, checking elements such as oil levels, water levels, tire condition, and overall roadworthiness. Any mechanical defects or issues must be reported to the supervisor immediately, and the vehicle must be referred for servicing when due.
Maintaining the cleanliness of the vehicle is also a responsibility of the Driver/Messenger. The vehicle should always be kept in a neat and presentable condition, both inside and out, as it represents the department.
The incumbent must obtain proper authorization for vehicle use before undertaking any trip. All required documentation must be completed accurately, including logbooks and trip records. The driver must ensure that all receipts and relevant records are kept safely and submitted as required.
Assisting with the checking and maintenance of logbooks is another important duty. Accurate record-keeping is essential for accountability and compliance with departmental policies.
The Driver/Messenger will also be responsible for collecting and delivering documentation and related items within the department. This may involve coordination with different units and ensuring that documents are transferred efficiently between offices.
Additional administrative tasks include copying and emailing transport-related documents when required. The incumbent may also be required to assist in the registry office, supporting document management and filing processes.
The role requires flexibility, as the successful candidate may be assigned additional duties by the supervisor from time to time. This may include assisting with transport filing, signing delivery notes, and ensuring that all transport-related documentation is properly managed.
