The Ministry of Sport and Arts invites applications from suitably qualified and motivated citizens of Botswana to fill the following vacant position. POSITION: DRIVER II (1 POSITION)
Location: Mahalapye
Salary Scale: B4 (P57,348 – P65,424 per annum)
Main Purpose of the Job
The primary purpose of this position is to provide safe, reliable, and efficient transport services to support the operations of the Ministry of Sport and Arts. The Driver II will be responsible for ensuring that vehicles are operated in accordance with established safety standards and that all assigned transportation duties are carried out professionally and responsibly. Key Performance Areas
The successful candidate will be expected to perform a wide range of duties associated with the operation and maintenance of government vehicles. These include the following responsibilities:
Driving Duties
The Driver II will be responsible for operating heavy-duty vehicles exceeding 3,500 kilograms maximum weight for non-articulated vehicles and up to 16,000 kilograms including trailers. This includes the operation of trucks and other large transport vehicles used by the Ministry. The role also requires the driving of all non-articulated buses above 3,500 kilograms, ensuring that passengers and goods are transported safely and efficiently.
Supervision
The incumbent will supervise one or more vehicle attendants where applicable. This includes assigning tasks, ensuring that attendants perform their duties effectively, and maintaining discipline and accountability within the transport team.
Compliance with Road Safety Regulations
The Driver II must adhere strictly to the National Road Safety Code at all times. This involves observing traffic laws, maintaining safe driving practices, and ensuring that all journeys are conducted in a manner that minimizes risk to passengers, other road users, and the vehicle itself.
Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance
A key responsibility of the role is conducting pre-trip inspections to ensure that the vehicle is in a roadworthy condition before use. This includes checking essential components such as brakes, lights, tyres, and fluid levels. The Driver II will also perform routine maintenance tasks, including the removal and fitting of tyres, washing vehicles, and ensuring that tyres, including the spare wheel, are inflated to the correct pressure. Maintaining the cleanliness and proper functioning of the vehicle is essential to prolong its lifespan and ensure safety.
Loading and Transportation of Goods
The Driver II will ensure that only authorized loads are transported and that all goods are properly secured before departure. The safety and security of loads during transit is of utmost importance. Additionally, the incumbent will ensure that vehicles are loaded and offloaded safely at their destinations, following established procedures and guidelines.
Record Keeping
The role requires diligent maintenance of vehicle logbooks. The Driver II must ensure that all trips are authorized and accurately recorded at the start and end of each work period. Proper documentation of mileage, fuel usage, and trip details is essential for accountability and operational efficiency.
Additional Duties
The Driver II may be required to perform any other duties as assigned to meet the operational needs of the Ministry. This may include assisting with logistical arrangements or supporting other departmental activities as necessary.
Qualifications
To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
• Possession of a Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) or Junior Certificate (JC)
• A valid Class C driver’s license for trucks
• A valid Class D driver’s license for buses
• A valid Professional Driver’s Permit (PrDP)

Medical Aid Scheme

Employees will be enrolled in a contributory pension fund. The Government contributes 15 percent of the employee’s salary, while the employee contributes 5 percent. This ensures long-term financial security and retirement benefits.
