Applications are invited from suitably qualified Botswana public service employees for the below position tenable in Letlhakeng District Council.
POST: CRAFTSMAN I (Plumbing)
SALARY:
B3 (P65, 508-P76, 908 per annum)
LEAVE: 20 working days per annum
Qualification:
Trade Test B in plumbing.
Experience:
Must have served for a minimum of 2 years at B4 salary scale Plus in possession of Trade Test B (Plumbing)
Benefits:
Contributory Pension Fund Scheme (Government contributes 15% and employee contributes 5%).
Optional contributory Medical Aid Scheme (Government pays 80% for Standard Benefit Option and employee pays 20%).
MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB
To provide plumbing services to Council facilities.
Job Title: Craftsman I (Plumbing)
Job Purpose
The Craftsman I (Plumbing) is responsible for carrying out a wide range of plumbing installation, maintenance, and repair tasks in residential, commercial, or industrial settings. The role ensures that all plumbing systems, fixtures, and equipment are functioning efficiently, safely, and in compliance with relevant standards and regulations. The position requires technical competence, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Key Responsibilities
The Craftsman I (Plumbing) will perform routine and preventive maintenance on plumbing systems, including water supply lines, drainage systems, and sanitary fittings. This includes identifying faults, diagnosing problems, and carrying out necessary repairs or replacements.
The role involves installing and maintaining pipes, valves, fittings, drainage systems, and fixtures such as sinks, toilets, and water heaters. The incumbent will ensure proper alignment, sealing, and testing of all installations to prevent leaks and ensure durability.
The Craftsman I will respond promptly to plumbing-related complaints and emergencies, such as leaks, blocked drains, or burst pipes. This includes troubleshooting issues, taking corrective action, and minimizing downtime or inconvenience to users.
The position requires reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine the layout of plumbing systems. The incumbent will measure, cut, thread, and assemble pipes and fittings using appropriate tools and techniques.
Maintaining tools and equipment in good working condition is a key responsibility. The Craftsman I will ensure proper handling, storage, and regular inspection of tools to promote safety and efficiency.
The role includes ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety standards at all times. This involves using personal protective equipment, following safe work procedures, and maintaining a clean and organized work environment.
The Craftsman I may also assist in monitoring water usage and identifying opportunities for conservation and efficiency improvements. Reporting recurring issues and recommending upgrades or replacements of outdated systems may also be required.
Proper record-keeping is essential. The incumbent will maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and any issues identified during inspections or maintenance activities.
Experience working in institutional, commercial, or industrial environments will be an added advantage. Familiarity with modern plumbing tools, equipment, and techniques is essential.
Skills and Competencies
The ideal candidate should have strong technical skills in plumbing systems and the ability to diagnose and solve problems effectively. Attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality workmanship are critical.
Good communication skills are important for interacting with supervisors, colleagues, and clients. The ability to follow instructions and work under minimal supervision is also required.
The Craftsman I must be physically fit and capable of performing manual tasks, including lifting, bending, and working in confined spaces when necessary.

Working Conditions

Duties:
Guides and supervises subordinates.
Carries out plumbing services to Council facilities.
Assess council facilities for plumbing and/or maintenance works.
Keeps inventory of materials for maintenance and/or minor construction.
Undertakes any other related duties as directed by management.
