SALARY SCALE: 84 (57,348-65,424) per annum

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB

To provide a safe, effective and efficient transport services at all times to the Ministry Department.

Job Purpose
The Driver II is responsible for the safe, efficient, and timely transportation of personnel, goods, and official materials as assigned. The role requires a high level of professionalism, adherence to road safety regulations, and proper maintenance of the assigned vehicle. The Driver II ensures that all transport-related duties are carried out in a manner that supports the organization’s operations while maintaining safety, reliability, and accountability at all times.


Key Responsibilities
Transportation of Personnel and Goods
The Driver II is tasked with transporting staff members, clients, and authorized visitors to designated locations as instructed. This includes ensuring punctual pick-up and drop-off while maintaining a courteous and respectful attitude. The driver must also transport documents, equipment, and other goods safely, ensuring that all items are delivered intact and on time.
Vehicle Maintenance and Care
The Driver II is responsible for the routine inspection and maintenance of the assigned vehicle. This includes checking fuel, oil, water levels, tire pressure, brakes, and other essential components before and after each trip. The driver must ensure that the vehicle is kept clean, both inside and outside, and report any mechanical faults or damages immediately to the supervisor or maintenance department.
Compliance with Traffic Laws and Regulations
Strict adherence to all traffic laws, road safety regulations, and organizational transport policies is essential. The Driver II must always drive responsibly, avoid reckless behavior, and ensure the safety of passengers and cargo. The driver must possess a good understanding of local routes, traffic patterns, and road conditions to ensure efficient travel.
Record Keeping and Documentation
Maintaining accurate records is a key responsibility. The Driver II must keep a detailed logbook of all trips undertaken, including mileage, fuel consumption, destinations, and purpose of travel. The driver should also ensure that all vehicle documents such as registration, insurance, and licenses are valid and up to date.
Fuel Management
The Driver II must monitor fuel usage and ensure that the vehicle is adequately fueled at all times. Proper fuel management includes preventing misuse or wastage and ensuring that refueling is done at authorized stations with proper documentation and receipts.
Safety and Security
The driver must ensure the safety of passengers and goods at all times. This includes following security protocols, avoiding unsafe routes, and being alert to potential risks. In case of emergencies, breakdowns, or accidents, the Driver II must take appropriate action, including notifying relevant authorities and the organization promptly.
Support to Office Operations
In addition to driving duties, the Driver II may be required to assist with basic office support tasks such as delivering documents, collecting supplies, or assisting with errands as assigned. The role may also involve assisting in loading and offloading goods when necessary.
Professional Conduct and Customer Service
The Driver II must demonstrate a high level of professionalism, integrity, and courtesy at all times. This includes maintaining a neat appearance, being respectful to passengers, and upholding the organization’s image. Good communication skills are essential for interacting with staff, clients, and external stakeholders.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

Drives heavy duty vehicles exceeding 3500kg maximum weight (for non-articulated vehicles) up to 16000kg maximum weight including trailer.

Drives all non-articulated buses above 3500kg.

Supervises one or more vehicle attendants.

Drives vehicles, taking particular care to adhere to National Roads Safety Code.

Performs pre-trip inspection and ensures that the vehicle is roadworthy.

Performs routine maintenance, which includes removal and fitment of tyre, washing vehicles and ensuring that tyres are inflated to the correct pressure including the spare wheel.

Ensures loading of authorized loads, the security and safety of loads being carried and safe loading of their vehicles at destinations.

Ensures that the logbooks are maintained at the start and end of work period and that all trips undertaken are authorized and entered into the logbboks.

Undertakes any other duties as required to meet the exigencies of the service.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    To be considered for the appointment to this position, candidate must have a minimum of Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE)/Junior Certificate (JC), should be possession of Class “C” and “D” (for trucks and buses respectively) and PrDP.
