An exciting opportunity has become available for a Cashier within the Trade division at the Cedarville Retail branch in the Eastern Cape. This position is offered on a six-month contract basis and is ideal for individuals who are customer-focused, detail-oriented, and capable of working in a fast-paced retail environment.
Job Summary:
The Cashier will be responsible for managing customer transactions accurately and efficiently. This includes processing payments, handling cash, and ensuring that all transactions are completed in line with company procedures. The role also requires the successful candidate to provide excellent customer service by greeting customers, assisting with queries, and ensuring a positive shopping experience.
In addition to cashier duties, the role involves maintaining a clean and organised checkout area and supporting general store operations. These responsibilities include stocking shelves, marking prices, and participating in stock-taking activities. The position requires a high level of attention to detail, honesty, and the ability to work effectively with both customers and team members.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
The successful candidate will be responsible for handling all point-of-sale transactions with accuracy and efficiency. This includes computing and recording transactions using cash registers, calculators, or scanning equipment. The Cashier must ensure that all items are correctly priced and that customers are charged accurately.
A key responsibility is receiving payments by cash or card and issuing correct receipts, refunds, credits, or change to customers. The candidate must maintain a high level of accuracy when dealing with financial transactions to avoid discrepancies.
At the beginning of each shift, the Cashier will be required to count money in the cash drawer to ensure that the correct amount of float is available. Throughout the day, the candidate must manage the cash drawer responsibly, including sorting, counting, and wrapping notes and coins as needed.
Customer service is a central aspect of the role. The Cashier must greet customers entering the store in a friendly and professional manner, assist them with their purchases, and respond to any queries or concerns. Building positive relationships with customers is essential to enhance their overall shopping experience.
The role also involves packaging goods appropriately by bagging, boxing, or wrapping merchandise and preparing items for shipment when required. The Cashier must ensure that all items are handled with care and packaged securely.
Maintaining a clean and orderly checkout area is another important responsibility. The candidate must ensure that the workspace is tidy, organised, and free of clutter at all times.
In addition to cashier duties, the candidate will assist with general store operations. This includes stocking shelves, marking prices on items and shelves, and ensuring that products are displayed correctly. Participation in stock-taking activities is required to help maintain accurate inventory records.
The Cashier will also be responsible for keeping periodic balance sheets of amounts and numbers of transactions. This requires attention to detail and the ability to reconcile daily transactions accurately.
Qualifications and Skills:
Applicants must have a Matric / Grade 12 certificate as a minimum educational requirement. Previous cashier experience is preferred, although candidates with relevant skills and a willingness to learn may also be considered.
Computer literacy is essential, as the role involves working with electronic point-of-sale systems and other digital tools. Candidates must be comfortable using technology to perform daily tasks.
The ability to work with money accurately and responsibly is critical. The candidate must demonstrate honesty, integrity, and reliability when handling financial transactions.
