Job Advert Summary
The successful candidate will become part of the Environmental Management Services (EMS) team and will be responsible for maintaining and developing landscapes and facilities.
The role requires the use of a wide range of horticultural tools, machinery, and equipment in a labour-intensive environment. The Gardener will be expected to carry out duties as instructed, ensuring that all grounds are kept in a clean, safe, and visually appealing condition.
This position plays an important role in supporting the organisation’s environmental standards and operational efficiency.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:
Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent qualification.
At least six months of relevant experience in gardening, landscaping, or nursery work.
Ability to operate horticultural machinery such as brush cutters, clearing saws, and lawnmowers
Basic knowledge of safety procedures and the ability to perform tasks in a safe and responsible manner.
Candidates who demonstrate practical experience and a willingness to learn will be given preference. Physical fitness and the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions are essential for this role.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The Gardener will be responsible for a range of duties related to the maintenance and development of landscaped areas. Key responsibilities include:
Performing general grounds maintenance, including the construction and upkeep of lawns and landscaped areas.
Cleaning and maintaining outdoor spaces through sweeping, weeding, watering, and overall care of plants.
Applying fertilizers, compost, and chemicals as instructed to ensure healthy plant growth and soil quality.
Removing garden waste, debris, and unwanted materials, and ensuring proper disposal or loading when required.
Operating and maintaining horticultural equipment such as lawnmowers, brush cutters, hand-held blowers, and other tools.
Assisting with landscaping projects, decorations, and construction tasks when required by the team or supervisor.
The role requires attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions accurately to maintain high standards of environmental care.
Knowledge Requirements
To perform effectively in this position, the candidate should have:
Basic knowledge of plant care, including watering, pruning, and soil management.
Familiarity with the use and maintenance of gardening tools and machinery such as brush cutters and push-type lawnmowers.
Understanding of safe working practices in a gardening and landscaping environment.
While advanced horticultural knowledge is not required, a willingness to develop skills and learn on the job is essential.
