Warehouse Workers (Truck Drivers)

The U.S. Mission in Pretoria is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for a position of Warehouse Worker (Truck Driver) in the General Services Office (GSO)

Basic Function of Position

  • This typical job description is for a warehouse worker (truck driver) who is in charge of running trucks, big cargo vehicles, or other vehicles that are owned or leased by the U.S. government safely and effectively.
  • Also, the incumbent is in charge of handling, storing, and transporting both disposable and non-disposable products safely.
  • The Warehouse Manager is in charge of this role, which is located in the General Services Office.
  • According to the job description, this role supports medium-sized positions without a property supervisor.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Driving and Transportation 

  • Transports disposable and non-expendable products to and from the warehouse to office buildings, residential properties, and other sites while safely operating U.S. Government-owned or leased vehicles, such as heavy or light duty trucks, pick-up trucks, vans, cargo vans, etc.
  • Uses forklifts, pallet jacks, trolleys, dollies, and other material handling tools safely to transport commodities to and from the right storage locations.
  • ensures that the vehicle is in operable condition by cleaning, polishing, and inspecting it both before and after use. performs a vehicle inspection and informs the supervisor of any issues. carries out minor repairs and maintenance on vehicles as necessary.
  • handles cash up to $1,000 and/or government gasoline credit cards with a $300 cap for vehicles.

Warehouse Operations and Maintenance  

  • Worker loads and unloads furniture, appliances, and other items from trucks and vans to the warehouse, including both disposable and non-disposable items (s). aids in the planning, assembly, and distribution of goods from the warehouse to structures such as homes and offices.
  • Without causing any harm to U.G. Government property, assemble and disassemble or move furniture, appliances, such as refrigerators, air conditioners, stoves, etc. as needed.
  • As ordered by the supervisor, assists with the packaging, unloading, and distribution of welcome kits to the new arrivals. organizes and provides temporary supplies to clients and other departments as needed.
  • ensures that trucks are loaded and unloaded properly so that they may be driven safely that Embassy property is not harmed.

Inventory

  • helps with the warehouse inventory to make sure everything is kept properly, there hasn’t been any theft, and there aren’t any safety or fire issues.
  • Do separate inventories of each apartment and check everything to make sure there hasn’t been any theft or damage to diplomatic property. identifies and reports lost or damaged objects so that they may be replaced.
  • helps set up stuff for sale or disposal.

Other Duties Assigned  

  • During visits and/or events, provides manual assistance with tasks including setting up control rooms, protecting property, tracking things and equipment, etc.
  • As necessary, escorts guests, outside workers, and unapproved personnel to and from the position.
  • When instructed by the supervisor, may be asked to assist with manual tasks in any division or office.

Required Experience & Qualification

Education

  •  Completion of high school education is required.

Prior Work Experience

  • A minimum of two (2) years of professional truck or heavy vehicle driving experience is required.  In addition to one (1) year of experience in manual labor or warehouse work is required.

Language Proficiency: 

English (Limited knowledge) Reading/Writing/Speaking is required.

Plus, any of the 12 local language (Good Working knowledge) Reading/Writing/Speaking is required.

Job Knowledge

  • good working understanding of warehouse practices, safety requirements, and USG regulations.
  • good working understanding of warehouse storage space use and upkeep.
  • good practical understanding of inventory management and equipment stacking.
  • knowing the rules and regulations governing local traffic. It is necessary to be familiar with local travel routes and regions.

Skills and Abilities

  • Physical fitness required for loading and unloading. Ability to move large things quickly and effectively is required. OSHA requirements state that you must be able to lift a maximum of 51 pounds (23 kg).
  • The capacity to properly handle forklifts, hand trolleys, electronic lifters, and other equipment used in warehouses.
  • Must be able to diagnose, manage, and perform first-class automobile repairs. the ability to spot car problems and notify the appropriate authorities right away.
  • Must be able to carry out assigned activities in all weather and environmental situations, including occasionally very cold weather, very hot weather, rainy or dry weather, and high winds.
  • A valid, lawfully obtained heavy vehicle driver’s license and PDP are required.
