Role Purpose
The General Assistant plays a key support role in the daily operations of the kitchen and canteen. The successful candidate will assist cooks and chefs with food preparation, serve meals to customers, operate the cash register where required, and ensure that all food service areas are kept clean and organized.


The role requires attention to detail, efficiency, and a strong understanding of hygiene and safety standards, particularly within a healthcare setting where cleanliness and food safety are critical.


Key Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:
Assisting with the preparation of meals, particularly salads, desserts, and other basic food items


Placing food such as entrees, salads, and desserts on the serving line in an organized and appealing manner
Ensuring that the serving line is consistently well-stocked, clean, and presentable
Maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in the kitchen, canteen, and all food service areas in accordance with company and statutory regulations


Supporting cooks and chefs in food production processes as required
Operating the cash register when necessary and handling transactions accurately
Storing and recording leftover food in line with company procedures
Cleaning tables, counters, kitchen equipment, and utensils to maintain a safe and sanitary environment


Ensuring that customer expectations are met and that a high level of service is delivered at all times
Assisting in stock control, including counting and handing over stock to the next shift where applicable
Reporting customer complaints or compliments to management and taking appropriate action where possible


Participating in meetings and training sessions as required
Assisting in the training of new employees when needed
Carrying out any additional reasonable tasks assigned by management


Skills and Competencies
To succeed in this role, candidates should demonstrate the following:
A strong interest in practical and methodical work
Honesty, reliability, and a responsible work ethic


Good hand-eye coordination and the ability to perform tasks efficiently
Ability to work quickly while maintaining safety and quality standards
High standards of personal hygiene and cleanliness


No allergies to food products or cleaning detergents
Effective communication skills and the ability to interact with customers and team members
A team-oriented mindset with the ability to collaborate effectively


Physical stamina to work between 45 and 50 hours per week
Ability to stand for extended periods, bend, and lift as required


Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
Must be at least 18 years of age
Must have completed a National Senior Certificate (Grade 12)
Previous experience in a similar role within catering or healthcare environments will be advantageous but is not mandatory
Willingness to work flexible hours, including shifts, weekends, and public holidays if required
