The City of Tshwane invites suitably qualified and experienced individuals to apply for the position of Operator (2 Posts) within the Transport Services Section, based at the Themba Roads Depot. This opportunity is open to both internal and external candidates and aims to support the municipality’s commitment to service delivery excellence in road construction and maintenance.


Position Details

  • Job Level: T6
  • Salary Scale: R235 476,00 – R327 048,00 per annum
  • Estimated Remuneration Package: R331 651,00 – R448 205,00 per annum

Job Purpose

The purpose of this position is to provide physical and operational support to a team responsible for executing maintenance and road-building activities. The incumbent will contribute directly to the construction and maintenance of roads, stormwater systems, and associated infrastructure. This role is essential in ensuring that municipal infrastructure is developed and maintained to meet required standards and community needs.


Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 10 (or equivalent qualification)
  • Relevant experience in the maintenance of road and stormwater infrastructure systems
  • Proven experience in operating road construction heavy-duty machinery, particularly a grader
  • A valid Code C1 driving licence with a valid Professional Driving Permit (PrDP)
  • Physical fitness and good health, as the role involves manual labour and outdoor work
  • Willingness and ability to work shifts, including after-hours when required
  • No criminal record (successful candidates will be required to undergo a criminal background check)
  • Willingness to have fingerprints taken by the Tshwane Metro Police Department at own cost

Primary Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:

  • Providing physical support to teams engaged in road construction, maintenance, and stormwater system projects
  • Assisting artisans such as road builders or masons with daily operational tasks
  • Performing first-level supervisory functions when required, ensuring that tasks are completed efficiently and safely
  • Operating small construction equipment and machinery used in roadworks and maintenance activities
  • Driving municipal vehicles and operating heavy-duty equipment, including graders, in accordance with safety and operational guidelines
  • Ensuring that all work is performed in compliance with municipal standards and occupational health and safety regulations
  • Supporting the team in maintaining tools, equipment, and machinery in good working condition
  • Participating in shift work and responding to operational needs as required
