Job Overview
Siqalo Foods is currently seeking to appoint two qualified and motivated individuals for the position of Basic Operator. The successful candidates will be based in Boksburg and will report directly to the Shift Production Manager.
This role plays a critical part in ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of production processes within the packing hall.
The primary purpose of this position is to safely operate, set up, and maintain designated equipment in the packing area to ensure that finished products are packed efficiently and in line with production targets and quality standards.
The Basic Operator is expected to contribute to continuous improvement initiatives while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and operational efficiency.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:
N3 qualification or equivalent
NQF Level 3 (Matric / Grade 12)
At least 1 year of relevant experience in a manufacturing or production environment
Basic understanding of machinery operation and production processes
Ability to follow standard operating procedures and safety guidelines
Good communication skills and ability to work effectively within a team
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Operation and Maintenance
The Basic Operator is responsible for performing pre-start inspections on all assigned machinery to ensure that equipment is safe and ready for operation.
This includes conducting routine checks, identifying any potential issues, and reporting faults before production begins. The operator must also carry out proper start-up and shutdown procedures in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
The role requires efficient operation of machinery throughout the production process, ensuring that equipment runs smoothly and consistently. Operators are expected to make necessary adjustments to machine settings as required, always adhering to SOPs to maintain product quality and production efficiency.
In addition, the Basic Operator will perform Autonomous Maintenance (AM) tasks up to and including Step 3 activities. This includes routine cleaning, inspection, lubrication, and minor maintenance tasks to prevent equipment breakdowns and ensure optimal performance.
Production Support
The Basic Operator supports the Line Operator and the broader production team in achieving daily production targets. This includes assisting at the end of production runs to ensure that all packaging materials are accounted for, reconciled, and returned to the warehouse where necessary.
The operator is also responsible for monitoring material levels during production. When pre-determined low levels are reached, the operator must obtain additional materials from storage areas promptly to avoid production interruptions.
If materials are unavailable, the relevant personnel must be notified immediately to resolve the issue.
Quality Control
Maintaining product quality is a key responsibility of the Basic Operator. The role involves conducting regular visual inspections of raw materials, in-process items, and finished products to ensure compliance with quality standards.
The operator must accurately record inspection findings and take immediate corrective action if any deviations are identified. This may include stopping the production line and adjusting machine settings to bring parameters back within acceptable limits.
Attention to detail and a proactive approach to quality assurance are essential in this aspect of the role.
Problem Solving and Continuous Improvement
The Basic Operator is expected to actively participate in problem-solving activities on the production line.
This includes identifying issues, conducting basic root cause analysis using structured techniques such as the “5 Why” method, and implementing corrective actions where possible.
Operators are encouraged to contribute ideas for continuous improvement to enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and improve overall production performance. Escalation of more complex issues to the Line Operator or Shift Production Manager is required when necessary.
Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance
Adherence to safety standards and company policies is a fundamental requirement of this role. The Basic Operator must comply with all safety rules, regulations, and emergency procedures at all times.
The role includes identifying and eliminating potential Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) hazards within the work area. Operators must maintain a clean and organized workspace, use personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly, and report any unsafe conditions or incidents immediately.
